Arena, ancient roman amphitheatre in Verona
A powerful earthquake struck northern Italy and Verona on 3 January 1117.
The outer wall of the amphitheatre was partially felled, and now is visible only a small part called "ala". The ring could not be reconstructed, because for centuries the Arena was used as a quarry and in 1480 was declared "gradibus vacuous" and the stones were used to build other buildings. Only after several years the monument was revalued and restored, and the "gradibus vacuous" law was abolished.
